VIRTUAL DERIVE
First thing that came up when searching Fukushina in google
Weird empty arcades/games inside multiple buildings.
It occurs to me that I saw a lot of architecture with straight lines. For example loads of buildings with the same kind of balcony style, very cmelancholy.
Change of lightning/day when zooming in on the building. Probably taken in different years.
Name of car rental reminded me of this cookie brand.
Change of billboard when zooming into the building.
Interesting website I came across when clicking on a random company.

After the first day of my derive I found out that the visible details of time changing in google maps appealed to me. The fact that you sometimes move a couple meters further or zoom in somewhere show how a place has changed over the couple years. Like for example buildings that got a new purpose or gardens that grew bigger. I wanted to continue within this interest so in my further derive I will look for these details more
Gardens and houses changing over some years.
When I zoomed into this mirror I saw these weird round shapes in the trails of the fence that were not there in real life. I was wondering if they were the result of a glitch in maps or maybe the mirror itself made them this way?
I really liked how simply designed this map was that I found next to a parking garage.
Smaller random details and buildings that I came across.
During this derive these big pieces of canvas that I think are covering some sort of garbage really stood out to me. Especially the yellow ones I saw appear in front of multiple houses.
Another example of change of time, here the red flags at the entrance and the U signs at the parking spots appeared.
Randomness that caught my eye. Mostly focussed on pastel light colors and unusual shapes.
When clicking on some stores I encountered I came across this one, a rice store. Something I have not seen before in the Netherlands or even Europe I think. Also further on I found more of these stores in Fukushima.
My classmate Chan Ho who was sitting next to me told me that this is the Chinese character for the word 'rice'.
I was checking out this billboard at a roundabout when Chan Ho recognized the yellow bird like mascots. He told me that in Japan every city/state has his own mascot that represents the area. Which I thought was a interesting fact, something that I've never heard or seen before somewhere.

After yesterdays class with Gabrielle I felt like diving in on more details and looking into the story behind some things I found, like for example the area mascots that Chan Ho told me about or translating some sings that lead me to other platforms that I can derive. The resemblances in my group with Anne Fleur an Americ were that all of us were interested in the signs and what they meant since we don't understand Japanese characters and found the mostly use of pastel colors intriguing.
''Ohashi'' = ''chopsticks''
'Searched on google maps for ''Ohashi'' and found multiple places named that way.
''Ohashi river''
'Really isolated island in the Ohashi river which is apparently better from the shore.
'Decided to follow some more sings, this one was ''Matsue''
Landed in Matsue the biggest attraction there was this bird park, on their website I found multiple ''funny'' pictures of their birds.
This one seemed very intense so I decided to translate again, and derive further on those words.
When searching the name of the bird the first result that came up was this anime character inspired by this bird, I thought it was funny that this was the first image google came up with instead of the actual bird.
